Emma (Tilda Swinton), a Russian woman marries into an extremely wealthy Italian
family that is presided over by Edouardo, her husband’s father. Emma is soon
assimilated into the family as mother, wife, and housekeeper and fully understands the
position of being married to a magnate. But it all starts to unravel when she easily
accepts her daughter’s involvement with another woman. The situation becomes
much more fraught upon the exposure of Emma’s relationship with a chef, who is a
friend of her son. The argument and actions that follow lead to the family’s downfall.
