Nightwatching

1642 was a poor year for Rembrandt. He fell from a famous and wealthy artist to a discredited pauper. His downfall was the consequence of painting the Amsterdam Musketeer Militia, a work that became known as The Night Watch. In the course of this commission Rembrandt discovered some most unpleasant facts concerning the group. When he decided to expose them they ruthlessly manipulated matters to ensure his fall from grace. Visually in the style of a Rembrandt painting, Greenaway’s film tells the tale and reflects on matters of life, death, art and portrayal.
