The White Ribbon

Set in a small village in northern Germany, 1913, Haneke’s feature won the Palme D’Or. Narrated by an old man recalling his days as the village schoolteacher, who explains that his tale ‘could perhaps clarify some things that happened in this country’, the story begins with the doctor felled from his horse by a tripwire. Then the baron’s barn is torched and his son flogged. After several such incidents, the village is at a loss what to do.
