Asa, just out of the Russian Navy, wants someone to hire him as a shepherd, but nobody will have him without a wife to cook his food and sew up his trousers. The obvious choice is the girl next-door, though next-door is a tidy distance away across the steppe. This girl next-door is Tulpan, and she has a mind of her own. Ten sheep and a chandelier won’t buy her: she wants to go to college.
